Personal History:
This is a rare case of a new game having so much buzz that I feel compelled to buy it. When the Kickstarter backers started getting their copies of this in the mail it seemed like it was all anyone wanted to write about. The prices on the secondary market shot up and it became a hot little item.

While there's plenty of opportunity to get caught up in "The Hotness" of new games, I'm usually very willing to hang back for a deal to hit or a trade to become feasible. There was just something about the delightful artwork and unusual board that drew me right in. It was just visually irresistible.

I picked mine up on Ebay, using a "flash sale" coupon code. I basically ended up spending the same for a copy on Ebay as the original owner did through Kickstarter, fifty dollars. I didn't really come out ahead in any way as the game is now on sale online for around thirty five dollars at most places, but I did get it earlier than most people, plus I got the forthcoming expansion and Kickstarter exclusive goodies as well for that price.

Gameplay:
Each player chooses a pair of pawns, and those pawns are placed on any unoccupied space on the board.

Players take turns completing two actions in order. First, the player must move one of his pawns. Pawns can move one space in any direction, including diagonally, so long as that space is not occupied by a player pawn. After moving, the player must build using the pawn which was just moved.

Just as with moving, a pawn can build one space in any direction so long as the space is not occupied by a player pawn. Buildings have four possible levels, and must be built in order, with the largest part built on the ground level, and blue domes added as the fourth and final level. Players may move onto and off of buildings during their movement phase, however a pawn may only move up one level during a movement. A pawn may not move onto a two-story structure, for example, unless travelling there from on top of a one-story structure. Players may move down any number of levels in a single movement. Buildings with blue domes cannot be moved onto.

Play continues until one of two win/loss conditions are met. First, if a player is unable to complete either his move or build actions, he loses the game. Second, if a player is able to move his pawn onto the third level of a building he immediately wins.

While those are the basic rules, the game also comes with "God Power" cards which add special powers to the game. At the start of the game a player chooses a number of god cards equal to the number of players. Players then pick their God Power from the selected cards, starting with the player to the left of the person who chose the god cards, and going clockwise.

God Powers have a wide range of effects, including allowing players additional movement or building chances, preventing opponents from moving, trading positions with another pawn, etc. Some god cards also allow for unique win conditions. Each is different and provide players with a variety of ways to play the game.

So How Is It?:
Continuing my coming-around to abstract games, this game is really great. Before I get to gameplay at all, let's just talk about how wonderful this package of stuff all looks. The board, to begin with, is so hilariously unnecessary in its design, but of course without it the game would be much less exciting to look at. Putting the board on a literal pedestal gives it a sense of loftiness that couples nicely with the gods and goddesses element. The building pieces share the same color and design sensibilities as those found on the island of Santorini, on which this game is based. It's a very striking visual, very classy looking, and almost contrasts the youthful, cartoonish artwork throughout the rest of the game.

I don't mean that as a knock on the character work, because they all look wonderful. The artist here has breathed such life into these ancient gods and monsters, and you can't help but flip through all of the character cards enjoying the detail that has been put into them. The Kickstarter version of the game even came with a little story book which tells a tale explaining how the game was first played by the gods, and is filled with even more delightful artwork.

The game itself, minus the artwork, hits just about every mark that my newly discovered love of abstracts looks for. First, it's super easy to teach this game. With or without the god cards, there's not all that many concepts to grasp. This means that a game can be going with practically any kind of gamer in minutes with very little stress or confusion. This is a huge plus for me, as unnecessary complexity can kill interest for a non-gamer, and I know a lot of them.

Even though it's easy to learn, there's a lot of strategy involved in playing this well. Since you have two pawns to move and build with careful movement and planning is key. You have to run offense and defense simultaneously, preventing your opponent from building structures which will help them reach the third level while at the same time trying to build those same structures for yourself. Doing one thing on your turn means not doing another, and it's often important to predict your opponent's movements several turns in advance. And all of that becomes tweaked and complicated with the addition of the god powers, adding another fun little layer.

The sense of fun is really what sets this apart from other abstracts. The gimmicky but lovely design choices and near constant screw-overs that you and your opponent will trade, in addition to the relatively quick playtime, make this such a lovely, thinky take-that fest. It has very quickly become one of my most often played games, and one that I force on nearly anyone who has yet to play. I'm also personally horrible at it, but that doesn't stop my enjoyment of it.

Now as I said earlier I do have an expansion which I've yet to try. Hopefully when I finally give it a go I'll remember to throw up a quick review here. As I write this the expansion has just become available to the general public.

Final Verdict:
A beautiful, high production value abstract game which is simple to teach as it is a blast to play. It scores an "Excellent" 5/5.
